Stockwell Main Road Communities

About us

We are a group of residents living on and near South Lambeth Road in Stockwell, Lambeth. We came together over the last year or two to advocate for communities like ours who are often forgotten about, namely those living on A-roads in cities. After doing manual traffic counts on our road and trying to lobby the council to install a AQ monitor we saw the BL programme advertised and want to now use our membership of the network and data from the node to boost awareness of AQ issues facing residential main road communities.

We all live on some of the busiest, most congested roads in London, and yet amazingly almost no direct data has historically been collected on AQ in Stockwell, despite this being one of the most densely-populated neighbourhoods in the UK, containing several ‘red routes’ (which make up 5% of London’s road network but carry 30% of the total vehicle traffic) and being right next to a national AQ blackspot - Vauxhall interchange. We have lobbied the council extensively for an AQ monitor to be installed, but to no avail, and so we are delighted to be awarded a node through the BL programme. We can now - finally! - begin to gather actual data on the air our families breathe to make the case for more investment in improving AQ and for the council GLA to focus more attention on main road communities. We have been so overlooked in recent transport policies, and getting the node and collecting data from it is a big step towards changing this.
