Clean Air for Southall and Hayes (CASH)

About us

Clean Air for Southall and Hayes (CASH) was established in 2018 in response to residents' concerns about the air pollution from the Green Quarter (Southall Gasworks). The site is a highly contaminated former gasworks and there is concern that it hasn't been remediated properly by Berkeley Group. Residents have reported asthma, cancer and pneumonia linking these illnesses to the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which have become airborne as a result of excavation and soil movements on site. We are campaigning for the regulator, Ealing Council to serve an abatement notice on Berkeley Group for statutory odour nuisance. As a result of publicity generated by the documentary 'Is My Neighbourhood Poisoning Me?' CASH became a founding member of Gasworks Communities United (GCU), an alliance of campaign groups and individuals concerned about the redevelopment of gasworks. Southall is a multi-ethnic area, experiencing deprivation and multiple inequities and the environmental injustice created by the remediation of the Green Quarter is another unfair challenge, creating further disadvantage for residents living in Southall.

For many years, residents in Southall have experienced point source air pollution from the Green Quarter, formerly Southall Gasworks, two incinerators and two asphalt plants located in the borough of Hillingdon. The installation of a node will provide data that we can share with residents to educate them about the negative impacts of air pollution on health and to use as leverage to influence Ealing Council to improve air quality in Southall.
